Salmon-crested Cockatoo
(Cacatua moluccensis) Also known as Moluccan or Seram Cockatoo.
Live and Habitat:Seram and surrounding islands, Indonesian archiplelago known as the Moluccas, Maluku or Spice IslandsPhysical characteristics:
Diet:: Wild diet: Seeds, fruit, berries, nuts, flowers, insects and their larvae. Do damage to coconut crops by feeding on young coconut. Zoo diet: Seed mix, fruit vegetables and browse. Enclosure cleaned twice weekly.Size to 50cm.
Breeding: July (presumably) Nest: In a tall tree hollow, with woodchip lining. Eggs: 2-3, incubated by both parents for 25 days
Conservation Status: Vulnerable. Deforestation, trapping for trade (cage-birds) are the main threats
General: Adult: General plumage white tinged a soft pink. Deep salmon-red crest. Salmon-yellow under-wings and tail feathers. Black beak,legs and feet. Eyes- male: black, female: reddish-brown.
Call: Loud quavering cry, shrill screech and hiss.
Habits: During the breeding season they form small family groups or pairs. May form small flocks outside of breeding season. Likely to be seen roosting in tall trees, when not feeding.
Chicks: Fledge at 3 months.
