Three Kings Skink

(Oligosoma fallai, formerly Leiolopisma fallai)
Also known as Falla's skink

Live:The Three Kings skink is named after the only place they can be found - Three Kings Island, about 58km north-west of the North Island of New Zealand.

Habitat: The skink lives among low-growing plants on the lower slopes of the islands. At night and in bad weather it retreats to shelter under rocks or in holes. It is diurnal and often basks in the sun.

Diet: Three Kings skinks eat ground insects, crustaceans, and the berries of a native daphne bush. They will also eat the partly-digested fish regurgitated by young gannets.

Conservation status: Abundant on the islands, the main predator is the harrier (kahu). The islands are now free of introduced pests.

General: At Hamilton Zoo they eat a mix of fruit puree and/or insects.
This skink has a lot of shelter to retreat to, as well as a wooden post to climb. The light above gives suitable uv wavelengths.

Please remember that all lizards are protected in New Zealand. You must have a permit to keep any of them, even one you find in your back yard or at the beach on holiday. Lizards are difficult to keep in circumstances where they are happy and healthy.
