Hamilton Zoo started its life as the Hilldale Game Farm in 1969 under the ownership of Mr and Mrs Powell.  They mainly raised game birds, although there was also a small collection of exotic mammals and birds for viewing.

Hamilton Zoo is now home to almost 600 native New Zealand and exotic animals, and boasts the largest walk-through aviary in Australasia.
