International Red Panda Day 2023

This Saturday (16 September) is International Red Panda Day!

We currently have two Red Pandas that call Hamilton Zoo home, eight year old Jamuna and three year old Sang.

There are a few differences you can use to tell the pair apart; Jamuna is the larger of the two, with a distinctive floppy left ear and defined face markings, whereas Sang's face is lighter in colour and his markings blend out a bit more.

Whilst there are no breeding recommendations between our current pair, the international breeding programme here at Hamilton Zoo has been a huge success in past years. With previous breeding pair Chito and Tayla producing eight offspring (including Jamuna!) in the ten years they were together.

Classified as endangered on the IUCN's Red List, Red Panda populations are steadily declining in the wild. Our pair play a vital role as ambassadors for their wild counterparts, allowing us to start conversations, raise awareness and educate visitors.

If you would like to support Red Pandas directly in the wild, or wish to find out some more information about this beautiful species, check out the Red Panda Network.

For International Red Panda Day, Hamilton Zoo will have a special keeper talk on Saturday 16 September at 12:00pm.
