What is a Zoo Host?

Hamilton Zoo has more than 50 Zoo Host volunteers. Zoo Hosts play an important role in making our visitors feel welcome and assisting them in all ways possible.

Our trained hosts talk to visitors about animals, give walking tours, assist zoo staff and disabled people, and may also help in observing animals at the Zoo.

To visitors, our hosts "are the Zoo", as it is the Hosts they interact with most.

What is required to become a Zoo Host?

  • Applicants MUST be over 18 years of age
  • People orientated, with good communication skills
  • Reasonably fit
  • Have their own independant means of transport

We ask that all prospective hosts commit to helping out at least 2 days per month, between the hours of 10am and 3pm. We also ask for a minimum committment of 6 months.

What's in it for me?

Being a Volunteer Host gives you the chance to share your interest in wildlife and conservation with Zoo visitors. It is a fantastic opportunity to meet and work with a wide variety of people, at the same time giving you an insight into the conservation and education focus of Hamilton Zoo.

It is an extremely rewarding role - you provide the vital support system for staff, keepers and animals at Hamilton Zoo.

How do I apply?

Prospective Volunteers are interviewed and if accepted, then take part in an Orientation Day, which is designed to familiarize all new volunteers with all aspects of the Zoo.

Applications from people from all walks of life are always welcome, but new intakes are only once a year (usually in September). Interviews are held during August.
