New Zealand once had seven native frog species but three became extinct after human habitation. The four remaining are Hochstetter’s frogs, Archey’s frogs, Maud Island frogs and Hamilton’s frogs. These four species are amongst the most primitive living anurans (frogs and toads) on earth - they have been around for 70 million years!
The evening includes an educational talk by Hamilton Zoo keeper, Kara Goddard, followed by a visit to the nocturnal frog house to meet the cryptic nocturnal native Hochstetter’s frogs. This is a rare chance to see these unique animals up close and personal.
Added bonus: Visitors to this event will also be enlightened by local bat expert Darren Le Roux who will demonstrate how bat detectors work in the zoo surrounds!
